Make your own taco seasoning

We had tacos for dinner last night and I thought I would share my recipe for homemade taco seasoning with you all. I know you can buy those little packets of seasoning from the grocery store for next-to-nothing, but I honestly have stopped trusting what food companies put in those nice little packages. I've "assumed" all of these years that the food you buy is what it appears to be, but know now that processed food is rarely anything like what it claims to be. So, I try to avoid any processed foods at all costs, and make as much of my food at home using raw materials. I came across this taco seasoning recipe about a year ago, browsing around the internets. It seems so obvious that we should be able to replicate the seasoning in our own kitchens, right? I mean, someone obviously invented a specific blend of herbs and spices that we identify as taco seasoning at some point, and then marketed it on a grand scale. But when I saw the recipe, I was blown a way for a second. It was like a revelation! "You mean I can make that stuff by myself, and don't have to spend $1.75 every time I want to make tacos?" Wow! It was kind of the same feeling I had when I learned I could make ricotta cheese, or yogurt, or the Rice-a-roni Mexican Rice. It's honestly mind-blowing for a few seconds.

So, anyways, if you're interested, here is the recipe. It's simple and takes about as much time as it does to rip open one of those packets. Almost.

TACO SEASONING:

1 Tablespoon chili powder
2 teaspoons onion powder
1 teaspoon each ground cumin, garlic powder, oregano, paprika, and sugar
1/2 tsp. salt

Mix all together. Brown ground beef in skillet, add 1/2 cup water and seasoning mix. Simmer for a few minutes until water has evaporated.
